class=\"text_text__nEn66\">In January this year,\u00a0<a class=\"anchor_link__6t7IO\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unilad.com\/science\">astronomers<\/a>\u00a0spotted two black holes colliding into one another in unprecedented detail, confirming the decades-long theories made by the genius physicists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">The cosmic event, dubbed GW250114, came to light when researchers used the two Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory&#8217;s (LIGO), stationed in Louisiana and\u00a0<a class=\"anchor_link__6t7IO\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unilad.com\/washington\">Washington<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">The instruments picked up on gravitational waves, minor ripples out in the midst of space, which came from the two black holes crashing together,\u00a0<a class=\"anchor_link__6t7IO\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/11\/science\/black-hole-collision-einstein-hawking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a>\u00a0CNN.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">Einstein made the first prediction of the phenomenon back in 1915, as part of his theory of relativity, finding the search for gravitational waves to be the only way of identifying black hole collisions from\u00a0<a class=\"anchor_link__6t7IO\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unilad.com\/earth\">Earth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div href=\"https:\/\/www.unilad.com\/technology\">technology<\/a>\u00a0would be able to pick up the signals, finding they would likely be too weak to be noticed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">In 1971,\u00a0<a class=\"anchor_link__6t7IO\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unilad.com\/uk-news\">British<\/a>\u00a0physicist Hawking entered the ring with his own theory on black holes, stating that when two merge, the surface area must be equal to or greater than that of the original.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">Fast forward to September 2015, LIGO made\u00a0<a class=\"anchor_link__6t7IO\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unilad.com\/history\">history<\/a>\u00a0by recording the waves for the first time, awarding the three scientists behind the discovery a Nobel Prize for their development of the &#8216;black hole telescope.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">Now, a decade later,\u00a0<a class=\"anchor_link__6t7IO\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unilad.com\/science\">scientists<\/a>\u00a0are celebrating another eureka moment in time with the discovery of the two black holes in clearer detail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">Maximiliano Isi, an assistant professor of astronomy at Columbia University and an astrophysicist at the Flatiron Institute\u2019s Center for Computational Astrophysics in\u00a0<a class=\"anchor_link__6t7IO\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unilad.com\/new-york\">New York City<\/a>, explained how the black holes measured around 30 to 35 times the mass of the sun and were spinning slowly.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-image_articleImage__eyzAn\">\n<div class=\"text_text__nEn66\">\u201cThe black holes were about 1 billion light-years away, and they were orbiting around each other in almost a perfect circle,\u201d Isi said. \u201cThe resulting black hole was around 63 times the mass of the sun, and it was spinning at 100 revolutions per second.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">He continued: &#8220;But now, because the instruments have improved so much since then, we can see these two black holes with much greater clarity, as they approached each other and merged into a single one.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">Isi claims the latest observation gives the team a brand new view into &#8216;the dynamics of space and time.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">\u201cYes, black holes are very mysterious, complex and have important implications to the evolution of the universe,\u201d Isi continued, \u201cbut mathematically we think they should be fully described by just two numbers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">&#8220;Everything there is to know about them should come from how big the black hole is \u2014 or what its mass is \u2014 and how fast it\u2019s rotating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">To measure its size, the scientist says researchers use the LIGO&#8217;s features to prompt a &#8216;ringing&#8217; or vibration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">He made of.
