At just five years old, Ryder Wells has endured more than most people face in a lifetime.<\/p>\n

While visiting family for Thanksgiving in 2015, the North Carolina toddler\u2014only 21 months old at the time\u2014was mauled by two 100-pound rottweilers.<\/p>\n

He survived catastrophic injuries: half of his face was torn away, his teeth were crushed, and he suffered a broken arm and a punctured lung.<\/p>\n

Doctors warned his family not to expect a miracle. Ryder proved them wrong.<\/p>\n

Since then, this little fighter has undergone around 50 surgeries. What he hasn\u2019t deserved are the reactions he still meets out in the world.<\/p>\n

His teaching assistant recalls adults staring when he first started school.<\/p>\n

His mom, Brittany, says trips to the park and grocery store can be brutal\u2014children have pointed and called him a \u201cmonster,\u201d and a stranger once sneered \u201cew\u201d as they passed.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt breaks my heart,\u201d she says, \u201cthat after everything he\u2019s survived, people still aren\u2019t kind about something he can\u2019t control.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brittany, 31, from Granite Falls, worries about how classmates will treat her son as school life unfolds.<\/p>\n

Ryder sometimes hides beneath a cap, lowers his head, and relies on his glasses to shield himself.<\/p>\n

Every day, she reminds him that he is beautiful, that being different is beautiful, and that it\u2019s okay to stand out. Nothing, she says, really stops him\u2014his resilience is as clear as his smile.<\/p>\n

Now she\u2019s speaking up to raise awareness of how bullying and casual cruelty affect children with facial differences.<\/p>\n

Ryder\u2019s survival is a testament to grit and excellent medical care; his daily challenges are a reminder that kindness matters just as much.<\/p>\n

Teaching kids not to single out those who look different\u2014and modeling that compassion as adults\u2014can help children like Ryder grow up with the dignity and joy they deserve.<\/p>\n
